As the project organiser of the European Social Fund (ESF), Virtuelle Hochschule Bayern (vhb) coordinates and supports university projects from diverse specialisations. Funding can be obtained for projects which will provide job-related further education via web based knowledge transfer from universities into companies. Professionals thus acquire innovative knowledge. Provision and acquisition of knowledge mainly take place in online courses and are supplemented by classroom lectures (blended learning). Through this knowledge transfer, employees can acquire up-to-date methodological and technical knowledge. The general aim is to increase the innovation capacity within a company. Additionally, valuable networks and partnerships between universities and participating companies are established in these projects.
The individual further and continuing training programmes for professional development are mostly targeted at small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) from areas in Bavaria affected by demographic change. The Bavarian State Ministry for Science and the Arts assigned the management of the web based trainings to vhb for the funding periods of 2007–2013 and 2014–2020.
