Information for students

The concept of the Bavarian Virtual University

The Bavarian Virtual University (BVU) offers free, high-quality online courses to students enrolled at Bavarian universities. Individuals not enrolled at a Bavarian university ("other users") can participate in BVU courses for a fee and provided that they meet the conditions for access determined by the course providers. Funded by the Free State of Bavaria, courses and materials are developed by university instructors from BVU member universities and reviewed by experts.

Student support and supervision – Communication

During the period the course is offered, which is most often the same as he lecture period of the member universities, students receive support from specially trained online tutors. Every course has tutorial support. Furthermore, students do not miss out on communication with other students.

Credit certificate

BVU courses are either a fixed component of a degree programme or can be used to acquire additional knowledge. Each course offers the opportunity to obtain a graded certificate of academic achievement.  Students need to clarify whether or how BVU study and examination results that are not an inherent part of their course of studies can be credited; ideally, students should directly contact the student records office (registrar) at their university or the examinations committee for their degree programme before registering for the course.

Quality

The feedback received, based on regular student evaluations of BVU courses, shows that students appreciate in particular the opportunity to take courses independently of time and place. Furthermore, students point out that they benefit from acquiring e-learning skills. However, they also realise that they have to take on greater personal responsibility for their work. But most students value this independence highly.
