Technical Questions

After logging in on www.vhb.org, you will see your personal desktop. In the header, you will find “Mein Account”; from the menu that appears after clicking on “Mein Account”, you can select “Passwort ändern” (change password).

If a secure SSL connection between a browser and a server has been established, the “http” that you see in the web address usually changes to “https”, for example, “http://www.vhb.org” would become “https://www.vhb.org”.
The browser will also show a lock icon (a closed lock), which indicates that data will be transferred encrypted. So, be sure to pay attention to the icon in the address line before sending data.
If no SSL connection is established, the lock icon will appear unlocked (an open lock) in the browser window.

When a course website has an insecure certificate, for example, one that has been produced by the institution itself or a certificate that has expired, a message appears in browsers that states, “secure connection has failed” and that the certificate is unreliable.
In such a case, please contact the BVU via e-mail to technik@vhb.org as soon as possible.  Please include the name of the course and its URL in your e-mail.  We will contact the course provider to address the problem.

You can use the BVU site in all popular browsers provided the following points are taken into account.
It is important that JavaScript is activated and cookies are permitted.
Pop-up blockers should be deactivated for the site, www.vhb.org, and possibly for the course web page(s) as well. If the blocker is not deactivated, the site may be incorrectly displayed, e.g., in the print preview of the enrolment or registration forms.
Special hardware or software requirements for individual courses will be stated under the header “Erforderliche Technik” in the respective course descriptions. If special ports in your firewall must be opened, this information will also be found by contacting the course provider, whose contact information is under the header “Verantwortlich”.
Some courses require special plug-ins for browsers, such as Flash, Shockwave, Java, Quicktime, Silverlight or Real-Player that must be regularly updated. In order to activate these plug-ins only for the course pages, you can use a browser with click-to-play enabled.
Unfortunately, it is often not possible to install these plug-ins on mobile devices.

Please disconnect your VPN connection if problems occur while you are processing your BVU authentication. If you do have difficulties, please contact the IT centre at your university.

Describe the error as clearly as possible:

  • Where did the error occur? How did it manifest (i.e., appear on the display, present itself)?
  • If possible, send a screenshot of the error message or the page where the problem is occurring, along with your description.
  • Please tell us which browser you were/are using and which operating system (please note the type and version of each).
  • It’s easiest to send us an e-mail with the text that appears if you click on our Test-page.
  • For Firefox, you can see and check the version and installed plug-ins from this page: www.mozilla.org/de/plugincheck/.
  • You can copy this text and e-mail it to the BVU tech support.
  • If you have difficulties receiving e-mails, please include the name of your e-mail and/or internet provider (T-Online/Web.de...).

Please send the error description to technik@vhb.org.
